30 Journal Prompts for a Private Diary, With a Question a Day

30 journal prompts for gratitude, feelings, your day, the people around you and tomorrow: the questions of the day in MemoLock, with a button to draw one.

A blank page is the hardest part of keeping a diary. These 30 prompts are the questions of the day in MemoLock, word for word: short, personal, and meant to be answered in a few lines. Draw one, or pick from the lists below.

How to Use a Journal Prompt

  1. Pick a time: in the evening, or with your morning coffee. The same time every day makes it a habit.
  2. One question, a few lines: you are not writing an essay. Three sentences are enough.
  3. Skip what doesn't speak to you: draw another question, or write about something else.
  4. Missed a day? Write it the next morning: a diary is for you, not a streak counter.
  5. Read back now and then: what you wrote a month or a year ago often says more than today's page.

These Prompts in MemoLock

In MemoLock 2.6, one of these questions waits at the top of the Diary tab each day, the same one all day. "Another one" moves to the next, and "Answer" opens a new entry with the question as its title. In Settings › Diary, you can turn the question of the day off, hide the questions you don't want, and add your own: they are kept in the encrypted vault, like your entries. The app has them in English, French, Spanish and German, following its language.

Your answers stay on your phone, encrypted and locked behind your code or your fingerprint. If you are choosing an app for a private diary, our guide on lock vs encryption explains what to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a diary entry be?

As long as you like. A prompt works best with a few honest lines; some days that becomes a page.

Do I have to write every day?

No. A daily time helps, and MemoLock can remind you once a day if you want, but a diary written three times a week is still a diary.

Can I add my own prompts in MemoLock?

Yes, in Settings › Diary › Edit the questions. Your own questions are mixed with MemoLock's, and kept in the encrypted vault.
